Taylor Swift has jumped from No. 8 last year to the top spot in Forbes magazine’s annual “Global Celebrity 100” list, released Monday.
Forbes attributed Swift’s rise to the 26-year-old singer’s quarter-billion-dollar 1989 World Tour, the North American leg of which scored $200 million to top the continent’s previous record-holder, the Rolling Stones. Her $170 million income also includes her promotional efforts for Apple, Diet Coke and Keds.
Author James Patterson — who’s credited with more than a dozen books a year with co-authors, and whose science-fiction thriller “Zoo” has been adapted into a CBS series — took the No. 3 slot, up from No. 7, with $95 million, up from $89 million. The next most successful music act was the boy band One Direction, which jumped from No. 4 to No. 2 although earning less: $110 million to last year’s $130 million. Following were Adele at No. 9 with $80.5 million; Madonna at No. 12 with $76.5 million; and Rihanna at No. 13 with $75 million.
Dr. Phil McGraw and soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo tied for No. 4 with $88 million to become the year’s top media personality and athlete, respectively. Kevin Hart (No. 6) with $87.5 million is the top-earning comedian and Howard Stern (No. 7) with $85 million was the year’s most successful radio host.
